RHHS boys defeat Bluffton, 64-59, win region title
The Jaguars are region champions — again.
Led by Rashamel Butler's 18 points and Devin Butler's 15 points, Ridgeland-Hardeeville High's boys basketball team defeated visiting Bluffton 64-59 Thursday to win the Region 8-AAA crown.
The Jaguars (20-1, 7-1 region) have won five straight region titles. They won the Region 6-AA title in 2014, the Region 5-AA title in 2015 and 2016 and won Region 8-AAA last season. Thursday RHHS repeated as Region 8-AAA champs.
RHHS led 44-42 after three quarters and pulled away with a 16-7 run early in the fourth. Rashamel Butler started the fourth with a basket and after Bluffton cut the lead to 46-45, Diamonte Robinson (12 points) scored on a jump stop that gave RHHS a 50-45 lead. A minute later Devin Butler hit a 3-pointer and Dequandre Hamilton (layup) and Da'Monta Pusha (3-pointer) extended to an 11-point lead.
RHHS coach Jeremiah Faber said he told Robinson before the game he needed to look for his shot more. The senior delivered. He scored seven first-quarter points as the Jaguars rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to end the first quarter ahead, 16-14.
Robinson gave the team a 16-14 lead on a basket with 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
"We played our game," said Robinson, a three-year varsity performer. "We are improving day by day."
RHHS, ranked No. 2 in the state coaches poll, host a first-round state playoff game Tuesday.
