John Paul II boys, girls ready for key region matchup
Subheadline: Golden Warriors visit HHC on Tuesday
John Paul II’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams enjoyed big wins recently, including three nail-biters for the girls. On Tuesday, the Golden Warriors have important region matchups at Hilton Head Christian, starting with varsity girls at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Warriors' girls defeated host Colleton Prep 39-37 on Jan. 20; beat visiting Colleton Prep 41-38 Jan. 26; and topped visiting Beaufort Academy 47-45 Jan. 29. JP II beat Hilton Head Prep 32-26 on Friday. The team is on a eight-game winning streak.
The girls (19-4, 8-1 SCISA Region 4 AA) are led by Hardeeville resident Tkai Devore (20.1 PPG). She scored 29 points in the Jan. 20 win over Colleton Prep and 26 points in the Jan. 26 victory. The team began the week second in the region.
“I contribute so much of our success over the past week to having a few years of being together and maturing together,” girls coach Karen Floyd said. “Our basketball IQ has risen greatly and we are making better decisions. My girls are extremely coachable and have adjusted well to the many changes we have made throughout the season.”
The John Paul II boys (11-11, 7-3 region) beat visiting Colleton Prep 71-50 Jan. 26; topped visiting Beaufort Academy 59-42 Jan. 29; and beat host Beaufort Academy 63-46 Jan. 31. They lost 76-55 at Hilton Head Prep on Friday. The team is led by Amere Cherry (18.3 PPG) and Rashad Battiste (17.6 PPG).
The team began the week third in the region.
