WHAT’S HAPPENING: Irma spreads rain, high winds to Southeast

MIAMI (AP) — Once-fearsome Hurricane Irma weakened Monday to a still-dangerous tropical storm as it spread high winds and rain across the Southeast, one day after engulfing most of the Florida peninsula. Both of Florida’s coasts were pounded by storm surges, thousands of its residents remain in shelters and millions of homes and businesses around several states are without power.

Storm update: Trees down, Power outages increase

Jasper County Fire-Rescue encourages the public to limit travel on the road. There are more than 2,600 customers without power.

School district closed Monday and Tuesday

The Jasper County School District said it will be closed for staff and students on Monday, Sept. 11 and Tuesday, Sept. 12 because of the inclement weather conditions expected from Hurricane Irma.

Tropical storm warning still in effect; transportation to shelter ends 8 p.m. Sunday

The effects of Hurricane Irma are getting closer to Jasper County. The National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning for the area, with peak winds possible of 30 to 40 miles per hour and wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour.

County keeps close eye on Hurricane Irma: Tropical storm-force winds, storm surge expected

Jasper County expects to see tropical storm-force winds that could reach hurricane strength wind gusts in the southern part of the county beginning later tonight into tomorrow, said Jasper County Fire-Rescue Public Information Officer Garrett Lucas at a noon press conference.

Part of U.S. 17 headed south closing at 12 p.m. today

Speedway Blvd (U.S. 17) is closing from Alligator Alley (S.C. 170) south across the Talmadge Bridge to Savannah at 12 p.m. today, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
